Correspondence, literary productions, lists, financial documents, proclamations and other official documents pertaining to Mier's life; history and conditions of Spanish America; and Mier family matters. Included are manuscripts concerning Mier's life (filed as G368 Ms., G379 Ms.); his persecution by the Inquisition (G384 Ms., G404 Ms.); history of New Spain (G326 Ms., G380 Ms.); and Mier's opinions of Spain's policies in the Americas and the independence movement (G343 Ms., G376 Ms., G377 Ms., G378 Ms., G409 Ms.), of New Spain's caste system (G349 Ms.), and of Emperor Iturbide (G403 Ms.). Constancias de la prisión ... (G375 Ms.) contains the Inquisition's opinion of Mier. Cartas de América (G355 Ms.) contains Mier's answers in Latin to theological questions and reflects Mexico's struggle for independence. Literary productions in the archives include essays, biographical accounts, and speeches, poems and reports. Proclamations include those which dissolved the office of the Inquisition and granted amnesty to persons exiled by the Inquisition.

Priest, writer, statesman, revolutionary for independence from Spain. Born 1763 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon; died 1827 in Mexico City. Mier entered the Dominican order in 1780, and by 1790 had his doctorate in theology and had been ordained. In 1794, Mier gave a controversial sermon on Our Lady of Guadalupe. First emperor of Mexico. Born 1783 in Valladolid (Morelia); executed July 19, 1824, in Padilla, Tamaulipas. Iturbide joined the army in 1800, by 1810 was fighting with the royalists, and by 1820 held the rank of colonel.
